Where to Put a Cat Bed: Create a Quiet Nap Spot

You have found a bed you like, set it neatly in the room, and your cat has chosen the laundry basket. Before replacing the bed, take a closer look at its location. A beautiful corner from a person's point of view may be noisy, busy or difficult for a cat to reach.

Start with your cat's existing choices

Make a small note of the places your cat already uses during the day. Are they close to you, tucked beside furniture or somewhere with a clear view of the room? Use those observations to choose a first location. You are looking for a place that works in the home you share, rather than arranging the whole room around a product photograph.

Cats Protection recommends quiet sleeping spots away from noisy appliances and busy household routes. It also advises keeping sleeping areas separate from food, water and toileting areas. A low-traffic bedroom corner might work better than the space beside the washing machine. Read Cats Protection's sleeping-spot guide.

Give them an easy way in and out

Before placing the bed, crouch down and look at the route into it. A door swinging across the entrance or storage boxes surrounding it can make an otherwise quiet spot awkward to use. Leave the route clear and avoid wedging a bed into a gap that prevents your cat from turning or leaving comfortably.

Some cats choose higher resting places. Cats Protection advises that these should be safe and easy to access, with clear entry and exit points. Consider your own cat's ability to get up and down. A loose bed balanced on narrow furniture is not a suitable shortcut to a raised sleeping spot. See Cats Protection's cat bed advice.

Offer a choice, then leave room for a decision

Cats may rotate between resting places, so one unused bed does not tell you the entire story. Offer more than one suitable option and let your cat decide where to settle. Once they are asleep, leave them undisturbed. Cats Protection explains cats and sleep.

Try changing one thing at a time. For example, move the bed away from the hallway while keeping the rest of that corner familiar. Make a note of whether the new spot gets used. This simple household experiment avoids buying another bed before you have learned anything about the first location.

Match the bed to the space

Measure the available floor area and your cat's resting shape. The Coffee Plush Donut Pet Bed is approximately 50 cm across its outside edge. The blue Octagonal Cushion Pet Bed is approximately 60 cm across the outside. Both have smaller inner sleeping areas, so those dimensions describe the footprint rather than the room inside the sides.

Follow the care label for whichever bed or blanket you use. During cleaning, keep another familiar resting option available. A successful nap corner can be simple: an appropriate bed, an accessible location and enough quiet for your cat to enjoy it in their own time.
