How to Choose the Right Bed Size for Your Dog or Cat
Share
A bed can look generous in a photograph and still leave too little room for your pet. Before choosing a color or shape, look at how your dog or cat actually rests. A tight curl on a chair and a full stretch across the rug tell you different things about the space they use.
Watch more than one nap
The RSPCA recommends a dog bed with room for comfortable natural sleeping positions, including stretching out. A round bed may suit a curled pose, while a flat mattress gives a different shape to work with. Read the RSPCA's dog bed guidance.
For your own size comparison, note both the length and width your pet occupies while relaxed. Take a second look when they stretch. Avoid moving or waking them to get a measurement. You can measure the space afterward, using a nearby floorboard or rug edge as a reference.
Write those measurements down before shopping. A breed label or a size name such as “large” cannot show you the actual sleeping surface. Two beds with the same size label may have very different dimensions and shapes.
Check the outside size and the sleeping space
Outside dimensions describe the bed's complete footprint. Raised rims, padded sides and a cot's frame occupy part of that footprint. The usable sleeping area is the space left for your pet inside those edges. Do not assume an advertised diameter is the width of the inner cushion.
For example, our Coffee Plush Donut Pet Bed is approximately 50 cm across the outside. Its recessed center is smaller. The blue Octagonal Cushion Pet Bed is approximately 60 cm across the outside, also with a smaller inner sleeping area. These are useful starting measurements, rather than a promise of fit for a particular pet.
Compare shapes with your measurements
A curled sleeper's compact outline may lead you toward a round or sided bed. A pet that regularly stretches sideways may need more uninterrupted length. If your pet alternates between both, check that the bed can accommodate the larger position instead of sizing only for the smallest curl.
For a rectangular option, the New Green L version of the PurrClean Pet Bed is listed at approximately 100 × 75 × 7 cm. Confirm the selected variant before ordering. For a raised option, our Compact Elevated Pet Cot measures approximately 55 × 43 × 18 cm overall. Its sleeping panel is smaller, and a weight capacity has not been confirmed.
Make a footprint before you buy
Lay out a towel to the listed dimensions in the intended spot. This helps you picture the room the bed will occupy, although it cannot reproduce its inner cushion or raised edges. Check that doors still open and people can walk around it.
If the inner measurements are missing, contact us before ordering instead of estimating from a photo. Check the product's current dimensions and care instructions, then choose with your pet's actual resting space in mind.
